A few decades ago, futurists took note of the rapid advancement in technology and predicted that employees will be working less hours during the week. They thought that technology would make our lives easier by this time. As you can tell, this is true and false at the same time. False, because technology made our lives more complicated and more hectic despite the comforts that it brought us. False, because the average employee now works more hours than the time futurists made their prediction.
Right, in a sense that now more Americans are working less hours in a workweek. This is because these Americans have been laid off by their companies and are not struggling to find jobs. Companies downsized to be able to survive the current economic crisis. The unemployed are pressured to find jobs and feed their families. The employed face the pressure of handling the remaining workload left behind by those whose contracts were terminated. Both scenarios have one thing in common: the people involved are under a good amount of stress. Stress has never exempted anyone; not now, and probably not ever.
Stress has been a human problem for the longest time. Nowadays, there are lot of stress management techniques scattered around. The goal of these is one of the same: to relieve stress. The varying methods are designed to suit different personalities, since we all have different reactions to stress. There are three main categories of stress management techniques. They are as follows:
Stillness: Most tress management techniques involve a certain degree of stillness. The main objective in these techniques is to induce a state of calmness or relaxation. Examples of techniques that involve staying still are meditation, yoga, and breathing exercises. Listening to music is also considered.
Moving: When there’s a no-moving technique, there will always be one that requires movement. These techniques are more on the distraction side. Engaging in sports or indulging in hobbies can turn your attention from the stress you face to something fun. Exercises also boost your energy that you may have rapidly lost due as an effect of stress.
Positive Mindset: Hans Selye, and endocrinologist, categorized stress into good and bad. Stress is neutral, but begins to become a good or a bad thing depending on how we react to it. Being an optimist, for instance, gives us the confidence to overcome the stressful situation. With a positive outlook, we don’t consider anything as threats and our bodies don’t release adrenalin so we can cope. When there’s no stress response, there is no stress effect.
There are tons of stress management techniques under each category listed above. Stress can lead to mental and physical health problems. We are bombarded with stress as time goes on. We may not be able to stop the stress from coming in, but we can definitely reduce the effects that it brings.

Exercise is always the best stress buster. Stress balls come a close second.
One of the things I’ve incorporated into my day over the past 6 months is going for a 20 minute run. It’s not a lot but running outside in the park has done wonders for my stress levels. I highly recommend you try this if you live in a place where it’s possible. I actually find I’m more productive after doing the exercise as well!
